A Scotland where everyone thrives

Tracy Gilbert welcomes you to 2026
A new year is always a chance for reflection as well as celebrating what we have achieved
Iknow that last year was challenging for many, with the continued hangover from the cost-of-living crisis and pressures on families and households still a reality for so many. At the same time, there have been many incredible wins. As we look ahead to 2026, my ambition is that we continue building on these successes and, by working together, make our home a better place to live for everyone.
National Progress with Real Impact
One of the most significant victories for workers last year was the passing of the Employment Rights Act. This landmark legislation will come into effect this year, effectively banning zero-hour contracts, secure contracts that represent the hours that people work and fairer conditions, including sick pay. Whether you’re a teacher, nurse, hospitality or retail worker, or in any other profession, these rights matter to all, and it’s wonderful to see them becoming a reality for people across our constituency.
The UK Government remains committed to lower energy bills. This is welcome news for households across Edinburgh North and Leith. I am also working closely with the Port of Leith and other stakeholders to ensure our community feels the jobs and wider economic benefit from the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables.
A major issue I am focused on is tackling violence against women and girls, including the less visible forms that affect daily life. One way I’m starting to do this is by supporting women with the Child Maintenance Service (CMS), which can often be used as a form of financial abuse and control. I am proud that this Labour Government has set out a clear commitment to half violence against women and girls by preventing abuse and supporting survivors, and I am committed to using my voice to deliver this promise. Everyone should feel safe in their home and community.
I am determined to build a Scotland where everyone can thrive. After a decade and a half of austerity, I am pleased the UK Government have brought this to an end and delivered an additional £10 billion of funding for the Scottish Government to invest in schools, local NHS services, and infrastructure. This money can be spent wisely to start the process of undoing the damage of austerity by investing in local people, services and communities.
Exciting Things Happening in Our Community
Closer to home, there is so much to celebrate in Edinburgh North and Leith. From improvements in parks and public spaces to exciting cultural and community projects, including the fantastic jazz and blues festival, our area is buzzing with energy. I’ve been heartened to see local initiatives bring people together, from local business collectives like The Shore Collective to community clean-ups, arts projects, or new facilities for children and young people.
This year, I’m looking forward to continuing to support these initiatives that create real opportunities for people in our communities. From helping more people into work, looking for opportunities to create well-paid local jobs, to backing local organisations that make a difference in daily lives, it’s often these practical steps that help families and businesses feel more secure and hopeful for the future.
Looking Ahead Together
2026 is a year of opportunity. With the Employment Rights Act being implemented, energy bills coming down, the removal of the two-child benefit cap and continued focus on improving public services, there are tangible reasons to feel optimistic.
I want to take this opportunity to thank our unsung heroes, our wonderful volunteers. From community councillors to the fantastic Leith festival organisers, so many local projects rely on volunteers. Sincere thanks to you all. By just turning up to an event or simply getting to know our neighbours, each of us can make a real difference.
Together, we can make Edinburgh North and Leith an even stronger, more vibrant place to live.
A Positive Start to the Year
I am so proud and honoured to represent the place I love and call home, and what a story we have to tell. With your support, I will continue to champion our voice in Westminster to make 2026 a year of progress, fairness, and opportunity for all.
Here’s to a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2026 for everyone in Edinburgh North and Leith!
