Like, he’s been coming here through all the owners since. So Laurie Reilly who spent all his time practising golf (in the bar!) rather than serving behind the bar. Eric Morrison, and then me, right? Like, he will say that to you, like, I look out for people.

And he will, you will see him playing pool with like a pink haired, you know, pierced hipster person who’s playing pool with a 70 something year old local who’s been drinking here for forever?

Like and it’s this beautiful mix of people. And it’s so.. As you go along the part of the thing.

I mean, it’s not it’s not meant to be valid, but it works out the way it is. You’ve got this crowd around tea time.

Then we get a whole other wave of different people that come in, we have a lot of hospitality folks drink here, like, you know, people who, you know, we try to keep them as low as we can. 4 people are walking on the street having a normal conversation, somebody’s going to go, that’s a noise from your car. You can’t ever win.

I did this huge post that was seen by 1000s of people, like about, like, be kind to our neighbours. Be quiet when you’re outside, you know, when it, when doors, when doors close, when we kick you out, move on, like catch your Uber up the street, don’t stand outside talking loudly outside.

And we even, you know, we did it in conversation with a licensing officer in police Scotland. They’re really supportive of us because we are respectful. We are respectful and we aren’t a problematic pub.

Our main ethos is kindness, right?

I was just going to say, you know, you would mention this anyway.

But the staff.. Are just exceptional, they’ve got that..

I sent them in. Exceptional stuff. We hire kind people.

How do the bands come? Who books the bands?

Do they phone and say can we play here? Often, yeah.

They’ll come to someone else’s gig and they’ll say, oh, hey, like, you know, come.

So kind of a life thing. Yeah, it’s very much word of mouth.

And then, you know, sometimes, like the Leith Folk club has sent us some people, like sometimes they can’t accommodate them, so they send them our way. And then, and then, they start talking to each other you know? So I’ve gotten messages from a couple of different touring groups and they’re like, oh, we saw True North there.

What’s happening to the Leonard Cohen once a year show. You did us a day of him.

Years after he died? Yeah, DJ Norman.

But it was kind of a, yeah, over to him. Which was nice. It was on Sunday because we always had The Sociographs, but it was, that was something Norman asked to book the lounge when he could have that event.

It’s someone else, someone reached out to me and they’re like, we want to have a Dolly party benefit. They want to raise money. This is where I made an exception because they want to raise money for her charity, the Imagination Library. And they want to do it on September 25th. So in America. It’s 925. Oh, I thought it was so clever, that’s genius.

But sometimes the band, the band take, yeah, sometimes they book it privately and sell tickets for themselves, but I, um, you know, basically Sunday through Thursday, I’m paying the bands and then Friday, Saturday, if people want to book it, then I book the lounge, but I don’t charge to book the lounge.

And for me, it’s that, but it’s also the mixture of people, like, really like the mixture of the, like, the just very, very community to come here. It’s reflective of Leith, which is what I really like.
